Gaussian beam optics

The area of optics that deals with the propagation of Gaussian laser beams in free space, or any general medium - i.e. lenses- under the paraxial (small divergence angle) approximations. Gaussian beams are a unique class of electric field solutions to the paraxial wave equation.  Gaussian beam propagation is governed by the ABCD law in which the general medium of propagation can be described by a single ABCD matrix and is also referred to as the ABCD law of Gaussian Beams.
