brightness meter

An instrument for measuring the brightness (luminance) of a scene. It may be a spot meter, covering an area of a degree or less, or an averaging meter, covering a broad area of the scene. Brightness meters may be visual, in which case an image of the scene is projected alongside a surface capable of being illuminated to a variable level by an integral lamp and battery. They may also be photoelectric, where an image of the scene is projected on a small hole behind which are a photocell and meter.
