electron-beam film scanning

The method by which photographic film is scanned by an electron beam. One technique uses the uniform light of a television screen, focused by a lens onto the processed film, as a means of creating a light source whose modulation will be dependent only on the varying density of the film through which it is transmitted. The transmitted light then falls upon a photomultiplier, which converts it into a corresponding electrical signal. A second technique involves the photographing of the images with film that has been treated with a special overcoating of scintillation material. This material remains clear after normal developing, but produces an image when scanned by an electron beam.
