exposure meter

An instrument used to measure the light from a scene to be photographed and to indicate the camera lens and shutter settings required to expose the film correctly. The exposure time required in a photographic camera depends on the sensitivity of the film, the brightness of the object and the f-number of the lens. The only uncontrolled quantity here is the object brightness, and a number of forms of exposure meter have been devised to determine this. The object brightness is measured by a photocell directed toward the scene, which may be arranged to determine either the average brightness or the brightness of a small area in the scene.
