lap

A metal tool used to grind lenses with loose abrasive (see diamond cutting tool). The functional surface of the lap is carefully formed to be opposite the curve to be produced on the glass (concave vs. convex). Iron laps are available for spherical, cylindrical and toric surfaces. Aspheric surfaces are sometimes ground by brute force with an iron lap and loose abrasive, but a succession of progressively more precise laps is required because of the wear produced on the lap by the abrasive.
