optical repeater

In an optical fiber or waveguide communications system, an optoelectronic device or module that receives an optical signal, converts this optical signal to an electrical signal which is then processed, amplified and converted back to an optical signal and then retransmitted. In the case of a digital signal, it is either reshaped, retimed or otherwise reconstructed before retransmission.
