panoramic camera

A camera designed to form a continuous record of an expansive section of the horizon. The typical panoramic camera is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis. A slit opening in the film plane and the film itself are geared to move so as to keep up with the moving image. A different type of panoramic camera is used in continuous aerial photography, the film moving past a slit in the focal plane at the same velocity as the image of the ground, caused by the forward motion of the airplane. The film velocity is sometimes determined electronically by a sensor that detects the motion of the images of terrestrial objects across a series of slits in the film plane. Panoramic cameras have been used in aerial photography with a swinging prism that scans the ground from side to side as the plane progresses forward, thus covering a swath that may reach from one horizon to the other.
