recombination radiation

The radiation emitted in semiconductors when electrons in the conduction band recombine with holes in the valence band. If population inversion occurs between portions of the valence and conduction bands (or between adjacent localized states of acceptors or donors near these respective bands) stimulated emission and laser amplification or oscillation can result. This is the radiative process of importance in injection lasers.
