semiconductor (SC): A material whose ability to conduct electricity falls between that of conductors and insulators. The conductivity of semiconductors can be controlled by adding specific amounts of impurities in a process called doping. That process changes the number of negatively charged electrons or positively charged "holes,'' unoccupied electronic energy levels in an otherwise full or nearly full energy band in a solid, which are free to respond to applied electrical fields.
