Photonics West 2013

We're just days away from the premier optics and photonics trade show - SPIE Photonics West 2013. Meetings have been scheduled, symposia and workshops have been flagged, and social events and networking opportunities planned. If you still have some free time, here are a few work — and play — options to consider adding to your schedule.

» Social and Networking Events

With more than 17,000 attendees, SPIE Photonics West is always a great place to network with colleagues and make some new connections. The conference’s organized social and networking events include the Women in Optics Panel and Roundtable on Monday, Feb. 4, which will feature a mentoring panel for women in science and technology moderated by Michelle Xu of UC Berkeley, followed by a round-table discussion.

A Speed Networking Social on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 5, represents the next generation in networking. Add a new contact to your network every three minutes while enjoying appetizers at an off-site venue. Bring plenty of business cards, practice your pitch, and prepare to expand your network!

» While in the Bay Area

All aboard an icon! The San Francisco Cable Car system is the world's last operational manually operated cable car system and is our nation's only moving national monument. The iconic cable cars operate much as they did on August 2, 1873 when Andrew S. Hallidie guided the first car down the Clay Street grade. Two of the three cable car lines stop in Fisherman's Wharf - one of the most significant tourist sites in the city. Fisherman's Wharf is best known for being the location of Pier 39, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the Cannery Shopping Center, Ghirardelli Square, a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum, the Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf, Forbes Island and restaurants and stands that serve fresh seafood - most notably Dungeness crab and clam chowder.

» Break for Wine Country

Just north of San Francisco is the world-renowned Napa Valley wine country. One of the most luxurious ways to experience this beautiful countryside is to climb aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train, which offers a relaxing three hour, 36-mile trip from the historic town of Napa through one of the world's most famous wine valleys to the quaint village of St. Helena and back. Truly a unique dining experience, guests of the Wine Train can enjoy the seasonal menu and view the vineyards and wineries from any of the vintage rail cars that have been lavishly restored, while sipping some of the region's finest wines.
