Rare Mineral Yields Light-Emitting Nano Triangles Rare Mineral Yields Light-Emitting Nano Triangles
A rare mineral formed into single sheets has yielded triangular structures with unusual light-emitting properties that could be used in technologies such as light detectors or lasers. “One of the most exciting properties of the tungsten disulfide monolayer is its photoluminescence,” said Mauricio Terrones, a professor of physics and of materials science and engineering at Penn State University. “We see the strongest photoluminescence at the edges of the triangles, right where the chemistry of the atoms changes, with much less photoluminescence occurring in the center of the triangles.”

Light-Activated ‘Living Crystals’ Created
Birds of a feather flock together, but what causes these flocks to form and move in a particular way has always been a fundamental question in nature. Now, however, a method using “living crystals” that behave in near-lifelike ways when activated by blue light, could provide the answer, say its creators at New York University.
