Pressure Tunes Absorption Properties of Perovskite Solar Cells
The voltage and electronic conductivity of perovskite solar cells have been shown to increase under high pressure. The findings suggest that either chemical or mechanical compression could enable tunable Perovskites — metallic crystalline structures — come in several structures, including hybrids made of lead, iodine or bromine, and organic compounds. The inexpensive materials have potential applications in LEDs and lasers, but one of the most popular areas of research involves solar cells.

Fluence Demonstrates Advanced LED Grow Lights
Fluence Demonstrates Advanced LED Grow Lights
Fluence Bioengineering, a photobiology design and manufacturing company, has developed an indoor and greenhouse LED lighting system with an efficacy above 2 µmol/J according to replicate collaborative testing conducted by Rutgers University and Utah State University. Testing found that the VYPRx PLUS lighting system had a 21 percent and 58 percent greater efficacy than the leading 1000-W double-ended and single-ended high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures respectively.

Reconfigurable Silicon Photonic Circuits Provide Control of Light Patterns
Reconfigurable Silicon Photonic Circuits Provide Control of Light Patterns
The ability to control light in a silicon chip could enable novel applications in programmable photonics circuits, including applications for optical testing and data communication. The development of flexible integrated-optic circuits that can be externally controlled was made possible using an all-optical spatial light modulator (SLM) to reconfigure photonics devices, making them capable of routing the flow of light.

JWST’s Giant Golden Mirror is Unveiled
As part of the integrating and testing of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), NASA engineers have unveiled the giant golden mirror of the IR telescope — it is heralded as the largest mirror yet sent into space. The 18 mirrors that make up the primary mirror were individually protected with black covers when they were assembled on the telescope structure, and now, for the first time since the primary mirror was completed, the covers have been lifted.
