Veeco Metrology Group has released the Digital Instruments Aurora-3 near-field scanning optical microscope for spectroscopy and single-molecule and biological fluorescence applications. The device combines optical characterization with scanning probe microscopy technology and features a real-time linearized scanner for one-step tip positioning. Compatibility with the Explorer SPM head provides atomic force microscopy capabilities as an option. The microscope's split light path enables simultaneous viewing of the transmission and reflection of the probe tip and sample. Its integrated tuning-fork technology regulates the probe-to-sample distance, eliminating the need for an additional feedback laser. The open architecture enables interfacing with detectors and spectrometers.
