The linear motor actuator series from Aerotech Inc. offers modular stages with no-load accelerations of 3 g and force outputs from 32 to 276 N. The devices' brushless servomotor is coupled to a noncontact encoder that delivers 0.1- to 1.0-µm resolution. The company says that, with a top velocity of 3 m/s and the ability to travel up to 1 m, the actuators are faster than ball-screw devices and are more accurate than belt drives. Applications include pick-and-place machines, gantry axes, shuttle stages, assembly machines and general-purpose positioners.
