A noncontact laser system that measures 135 x 26 x 77 mm is available from Renishaw Inc. The NC3 has tool-setting and breakage-detection features for probing small machining centers and high-speed cutting machines. The company says the system features improved response time, reduced air consumption and precision measurement of tool length and diameter. It can measure tools as small as 0.2 mm in diameter anywhere along the laser beam and offers repeatability of ±0.1 µm. Microhole technology provides a continuous stream of air through apertures to protect the system from contaminants such as coolant, chips and graphite.
