Model 18X7 80-MHz high-gain balanced receivers are designed for small-signal detection at low frequencies. Available from New Focus Inc., the devices are suitable for coherent heterodyne detection and for use in lidar applications. They subtract the photocurrent from two well-matched photodetectors, canceling common-mode noise present on the reference and signal beams, and amplify any imbalance between the photocurrents. Visible and near-IR models are available with free-space or fiber interfaces.
