The ADN8810 from Analog Devices Inc. is a single-chip precision current source for tunable lasers in optical networks and for applications that require low drift, low noise and high precision. The device integrates 12-bit digital-to-analog converters and amplifiers, reducing design time and board space and eliminating the need for matching resistors. The ADN8810 communicates with the host system over a serial interface and scales its output current -- programmable from 50 to 250 mA via an external sense resistor -- for front mirror, back mirror and gain to drive different laser sections. A microcontroller programs the converter to a specific output by writing directly to the digital interface.
