A new version of the LSM 5 confocal laser-scanning microscope has been released by Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH. It offers quantitative data with collocalization coefficients and correlation parameters, which are linked to a thresholding function that can be directly extracted from image regions. The software package allows the acquisition of image time series and complete concentration in live cell experiments using single-wavelength and ratiometric ion indicator dyes. The LSM 5 also features a fast objective focusing device and a 405-nm blue diode laser for visualizing DAPI and FRET imaging and experiments with fluorescent proteins.
