Spectrum Thin Films Corp. has expanded its optical coating capabilities with the addition of a coating machine with a 54-in. box evaporator and five planets for substrates up to 18 in. in diameter and for more complex coatings using pulsed ion beam technology. The custom-designed machine features substrate heaters, an ion source for low-temperature coatings, generic tooling and computer control. It also monitors thickness of metal films and includes an optical monitoring system for high accuracy. The company says coating is performed at less than 100 °C, while maintaining coating hardness and film properties.
