A profile sensor capable of acquiring 2-D projection data has been introduced by Hamamatsu Corp. The company says that the S9132 is more suitable for detection applications than conventional CMOS area image sensors and 2-D position-sensitive detectors. The device offers improved output linearity, simplified external circuitry and the ability to detect multiple light spots. It acquires a projection profile in the X- and Y-axes to produce high-speed position and moving-object detection from very small amounts of information. The sensor has low power consumption, a high-speed frame rate and a 10-bit/8-bit switchable analog-to-digital converter.
