A 488-nm, 20-mW laser for bioscience instrument OEMs has been unveiled by Picarro Inc. Developed to replace argon-ion and solid-state lasers in bioscience instruments, the compact cyan laser offers a mean time to failure in excess of 20,000 h. The design features a frequency-doubled external-cavity semiconductor laser that is 1/5 to 1/10 the size of an argon laser and dissipates 1/40 the heat. The company says it dissipates 50% less heat than most solid-state alternatives.
