Long-Travel Rack-and-Pinion StagesEdmund Industrial Optics' new metric rack-and-pinion stages are ideal for long-travel breadboard applications. These stages comprise two separate pieces: the long-travel track and the rack-and-pinion carrier.

The tracks are an extruded aluminum dovetail design with a brass rack. The precision design allows the carrier to fit snugly against the mating dovetail of the track, which features four M6 clearance holes on 100-mm squares for mounting to metric baseplates and breadboards (M6 threaded screws included). Each track also includes a linear scale (1-mm graduations) that is aligned with the stage vernier. Track options are available in 125-, 250- or 550-mm travel lengths.

The carriers are available in two models: course adjustment (one knob) and course/fine adjustment (two knobs). Each carrier features four M4 X 0.7 tapped holes on 50 mm and one centered M6 X 1.0 tapped hole for mounting various posts and optical components. The helical movement on the carriers provides smooth travel across the brass rack. Multiple carriers can be used on the same stage.
