Hamamatsu Photonic Systems says that its C7190-53 electron bombardment CCD camera produces spotless images in low light at fast frame rates. The device features a high-gain sensor and electronics that are particularly suitable for applications in laminar flow and the physical sciences, as well as for materials, genetic and bioscience research. The technology involves a vacuum chamber in which electrons generated at the photocathode by a high potential are accelerated into a back-thinned and -illuminated CCD. The direct bombardment of the CCD by accelerated electrons provides high-gain, high-resolution images and is an improvement over microchannel plate technology.
