Available from the Noyes Div. of AFL Telecommunications, Micro Care Corp.'s cleaning solvent for fiber optic connectors comes in a pump-spray canister and, the company says, is nonflammable, environmentally safe and residue-free. It dissolves light oils, salt, grime and uncured epoxies from connector end faces and, because it is hygroscopic, absorbs small amounts of moisture while cleaning. Plastic-safe and double-filtered to 0.2 µm during packaging, the solvent can remove the silicone pastes used inside fiber optic cables, which alcohol cannot. It comes in a compact, hermetically sealed container to avoid cross-contamination. The company also has developed a cleaning swab for use with the solvent. The swabs are made of synthetic extruded polyester, can clean both male and female connectors and are available in three sizes.
