Renishaw plc has developed a quality control system that uses Raman spectroscopy to determine diamond-like-carbon film parameters such as film thickness, hydrogen content and chemical bonding of the carbon. The measurements are performed with no sample preparation and with typical data acquisition times of 10 s. Samples can range in size from 1 µm to >150 mm, and the system can be semiautomated with software to provide a pass/fail message during production. Fiber optic cables up to 50 m long can run among as many as four stations and a central base unit.
