Sofradir has developed a 640 × 512, TV-format, 15-µm-pitch mid-infrared detector for use by defense and security equipment manufacturers in portable thermal imagers and missile seekers, as well as for use in surveillance, targeting and homing infrared equipment. Called Scorpio, it operates in the 3- to 5-µm range and comes with a miniature cryogenic cooler. The company says that, with four times more pixels than standard detectors, it achieves higher sensitivity, consumes less power and produces better image quality at greater distances. The device is based on proprietary hybridization mercury-cadmium-telluride technology, a siliconlike implantation process that consists of simplified steps and produces high yield.
