OPTICAL DESIGN SOFTWARE Optis has released OptisWorks Odyssey, optical design software that is fully integrated into a CAD program. The technology allows mechanical designers to work on optical systems and to share information with optical designers. First- and third-order performances, sequential and nonsequential ray tracing, wavefront surfaces, point-spread function, modulation transfer function and the spot diagram of any optical system can be determined with mechanical precision, using real optical surfaces. Libraries of the leading lens manufacturers are available as standard in the software. When simulated in the software package, the optomechanical system will be parameterized, so that altering one part will automatically alter the surrounding mechanical parts as necessary.

ray tracing
The mathematical calculation of the path traveled by a ray through an optical component or system.
spot diagram
A method of evaluating image quality whereby a large number of rays are traced through a lens from a single object point, and their intersections with the focal plane are plotted and analyzed.
