StockerYale Inc. designed and optimized its EDF-980-T3 erbium-doped fiber for use in C-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. With a cutoff value in the 1100- to 1250-nm range, the fiber will propagate the 980-nm pump wavelength in the single-mode regime. The result is better overlap of the pump with the core and of the signal with the core. Higher pump absorption for a given erbium concentration as well as a higher gain are achievable.
