Witec Instruments Corp. has released the CRM 200 confocal Raman microscope, which performs nondestructive imaging of chemical properties without specialized sample preparation. Acquisition time for a single Raman spectrum is <100 ms, and differences in chemical composition can be analyzed with resolution down to 200 nm. The company says that the confocal setup reduces unwanted background signals, enhances contrast and yields depth information. A video camera and white-light illumination are integrated for high-resolution sample survey, and a variety of laser sources are available for excitation. The lateral resolution is not limited by any mechanical properties of the highly accurate, piezo-driven X-Y-Z scan stage.
