Arrayed Fiberoptics Corp. has announced its high-return-loss 2-D fiber array for use as a subcomponent for optical fiber systems. Large fiber optic switches as well as industrial, scientific and military applications often require at least a 40-dB return loss, which is not possible with surface-normal-polished fiber end faces. Incorporating a patent-pending optical design that increases the return loss by 15 dB, or an attenuation factor of 30, combined with an AR coating, these fiber arrays achieve a typical return loss of ~50 dB. And the company says that they increase power-handling ability by nearly two orders of magnitude.
