EMCCD CAMERA Photometrics, a division of Roper Scientific Inc., has released the Cascade II:512, a 16-bit, high-resolution electron-multiplying (EM) CCD camera for the life sciences. The instrument features cooling down to −80 °C without using water or liquid nitrogen, eliminating bulky water circulators and cryogenic compressors. The thermoelectric air cooling provides ultrahigh gain and low dark noise, achieving the sensitivity required for applications such as low-light fluorescence, total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, spectral imaging and luminescence. The user can operate the camera at 10 MHz for high-speed image visualization or more slowly for high-precision photometry. Independent amplifiers allow electron-multiplying CCD operation with or without on-chip multiplication gain.
