High-Power Ti:S AmplifierSANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 25 -- Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) has expanded its family of ultrafast laser products with the Legend HE Cryo, a high-power titanium:sapphire (Ti:S) amplifier that delivers up to 7 mJ/pulse with a pulse duration of less than 50 femtoseconds -- more than double the duration of earlier Legend amplifiers. The Legend HE Cryo also sets new standards in terms of average power (up to 25 W) and peak power (over 100 GW); yet the beam quality (M2<1.5), noise levels and pulse-to-pulse stability (±1%) are similar to amplifiers with much lower power ratings, the company said. The new amplifier can be operated at pulse repetition rates up to 7 kHz.
Coherent said that in the past, the operating power of high-performance Ti:S amplifiers has been limited by increased thermal lensing in the Ti:S crystal. The Legend HE Cryo uses a closed-loop cryogenic "cold finger" to cool the Ti:S crystal to 33? K, thus reducing the thermal lensing effect by nearly three orders of magnitude. This allows the new Legend HE Cryo multipass amplifier to take full advantage of the 90-W output power available from Coherent Evolution pump lasers.
Applications for the Legend HE Cryo include particle injection for linear accelerators, high-energy plasma studies and research in surface physics effects. The high-power output is also useful for investigations of advanced materials processing techniques in micromachining and microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) fabrication.
