Morgan Electro Ceramics has introduced piezoelectric multilayer actuators for mirror positioning. Providing precise, controllable and repeatable displacement in the micron and submicron range, the devices are capable of kilonewtons of force, microns of expansion and tens of microseconds of response time. The company says that its multilayer manufacturing technique reduces component size, yielding faster response time and higher resonant modes to enable higher frequencies of operation. The actuators come with layer thicknesses between 20 and 60 µm.
