DIAMOND LENSES Targeting applications in next-generation optical data storage, Element Six BV offers high-numerical-aperture solid-immersion lenses fabricated from synthetic single-crystal diamond. Grown using chemical vapor deposition, the material has a high transparency and refractive index in the blue and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum, making it suitable for use with the short-wavelength lasers at the heart of Blu-ray optical disk systems. The company says that its diamond processing technology improves the form accuracy of 1-mm-diameter solid-immersion lenses by an order of magni-tude compared with earlier approaches, enabling storage capacities of up to 1 TB per optical disk.
