Schott North America Inc. has introduced high-resolution fiber optic faceplates and tapers based on a multistep fiber drawing process. Its heating method produces fibers with diameters ranging from 2.5 to 6 µm and with a numerical aperture of 1.0, and provides high-resolution (up to 228 lines per millimeter), low-shear image transmission for the coherent faceplates and tapers. The technology is suitable for medical and industrial x-ray, display, night vision for defense and image intensification for commercial security applications.
