Zemax Development Corp. has announced that its optical system design software now supports up to eight CPUs per machine for use on the most advanced computing workstations. Multithreading -- tracing one ray on one processor, another on a second, and so on, and then combining the results -- is now possible. An eight-CPU machine will trace rays almost eight times faster than a single machine. Applications include global optimization, stray light analysis and laser beam propagation.
