A line of low-noise, application-specific, large-area InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes has been introduced by Princeton Lightwave Inc. The front-illuminated devices, supplied in a standard TO-18 can with a window cap or on a custom ceramic carrier, are available with a clear optical active area of 80, 110 or 200 µm. They have high responsivity from 0.95 to 1.65 µm and operate over a temperature range from −40 to 85 °C. Laser radar applications include eye-safe commercial rangefinding, free-space optical communications and Earth atmospheric studies.
