Basler Vision Technologies has introduced cameras that support the GenICam standard for software access. The company worked with other manufacturers to develop the standard, named for Generic Interface for Cameras, which allows compatibility between different camera and interface technologies. From a comprehensive description of the cameras properties in an xml file, a translator produces a C++ application program interface through which an application can communicate with a camera. This allows the user to change instruments or interface technologies such as IEEE-1394 or Gigabit Ethernet with little or no change in software.
