Arctic-Photonics.jpgUltracompact, monolithic, short-pulse solid-state lasers with output wavelengths of 946, 1047 and 1064 nm and peak powers of up to 50 kW are available from Arctic Photonics Ltd. Pulse widths are <1 ns. The 946nm models are suitable for rangefinding applications and, the company says, offer better detection sensitivity than traditional transmitters when used with silicon-based receivers. Lasers for supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal and standard optical fiber are designed to maximize conversion efficiency while avoiding fiber damage. Suitable for portable measurement systems, lasers used as excitation sources for microLIBS systems have peak powers of 50 kW and focused intensities of >100 GW/cm2. Their >1-kHz repetition rate enables fast data acquisition in surface-mapping applications.
