A compact, high-definition-TV-compatible, 1280 × 1024-pixel midwave infrared (MWIR) detector with a 15-μm pixel pitch has been produced by Sofradir. Jupiter is a third-generation mercury-cadmium-telluride detector grown by molecular beam epitaxy that operates in the 3- to 5-μm waveband at a temperature of 90 K (–183 °C). It uses a linear 1-W microcooler and offers a 99.8% level of operability.
