PI_PiezoMotorStage.gifPI (Physik Instrumente) LP’s P-652 piezoelectric linear-motor-driven translation stage has only four parts, measures 9  × 6.5 × 2.4 mm, has a travel range of 3.2 mm and can operate at speeds of up to 80 mm/s. Resolution is better than 0.1 μm, holding force is >0.2 N, operating current is 55 mA, and operating voltage is from 2.8 to 3.2 V. The stage comprises an ultrasonic piezoelectric resonator and two lateral sliders pressed against it by a spring that doubles as a moving carriage. The load is mounted directly on the carriage and is moved by a force of up to 110 mN. Because it has no lead screws or other rotating parts, the stage is backlash-free. Power consumption in steady-state conditions is zero, and no external brake is required to maintain stability.
