Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation equipment targeted for 40-Gb/s support has been launched by General Photonics Corp. The PMDE-301 is an emulator that uses three proprietary polarization controllers and three differential group delay lines to generate an accurate Maxwellian probability density function with a tunable mean value. It also serves to test the performance of polarization compensators. The PMD-601 is an integrated development platform supplying hardware and software for applications such as PMD emulation, compensation and monitoring, system evaluation and algorithm development. Designers can configure up to six individual modules with functions for PMD effects, including controllers, variable differential group delays and a high-speed polarimeter.
