Jenoptik Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH has introduced fiber-coupled integrated optical light modulators that use the fast electro-optical response of photonic crystals for amplitude and phase modulation of laser light in the visible and infrared regions, from 500 to 1600 nm. Modulation frequencies in the gigahertz range and low modulation voltages characterize the compact devices. Optical coupling is achieved by various optional waveguide types. Upon request, the modulators can be combined with specially adapted controllers or analog amplifiers. They offer short switching times and reduced laser pulse rates. Light power is up to 300 mW, rise times are below 1 ns, and extinction ratios exceed 1000:1.
