Elk Industries LLC has released a patented optical element for lasers, a four-sided pyramid that can be used as a 0° reflector to reflect laser or other optical beams or rays back toward the source when the beam is directed through the base toward the apex of the pyramid. A beam also can be directed through one of the triangular faces of the pyramid toward the base and reflected outward through the opposite face of the pyramid. When used as a prism, the pyramid breaks up a spectrum of light into its component colors. The elements exhibit total internal reflection at certain angles, eliminating the laser damage problems associated with coatings. Specifications include a 1 × 1-in. base, a 1.51677 index of refraction and an apex angle of ∼90°.
