The M-122 palm-top-sized precision translation stage combines small dimensions, high speeds and very high accuracy at a competitive price, according to its maker, PI (Physik Instrumente) LP. It features a space-saving, folded drive train with the servomotor and drive screw side by side.

The M-122.2DD miniature translation stage (shown to scale next to a golf ball) features a precision linear encoder and a highly efficient ball screw for high speed and accuracy.
Equipped with a noncontacting optical linear encoder and a preloaded, precision-ground ball screw, these stages can provide much higher accuracy and better repeatability than conventional stepper-motor stages or rotary encoder-equipped servomotor stages, PI said.

Features & Advantages:

  • Long travel range: 25 mm (1 in.)
  • Smallest ball-screw stage with linear encoder at 60 x 86 x 20 mm
  • Servomotor direct drive provides up to 20 mm/sec
  • Significantly better dynamic response than stepper-motor drives
  • 0.1-µm resolution optical linear encoder for higher linearity and repeatability
  • Cross-roller bearings for high load capacity and excellent guiding accuracy
  • Recirculating ball screw has much lower friction than conventional lead screws
Pi said typical applications for the M-122 include metrology, quality assurance testing, micromachining, photonics packaging, and fiber positioning.

M-122 stages can be driven with the low-cost, networkable, C-862 Mercury servomotor controller/driver. For multiaxis applications, the C-843 PC board is available, PI said.

The stages can be combined to form very compact XY and XYZ systems. Due to its low-friction, the backlash-free ball screw yields significantly higher mechanical efficiency than lead screws, and allows maintenance-free, high duty-cycle operation at high velocities -- up to 20 mm/sec, according to the company.
