High-purity calcined alumina polishing abrasives that are premixed or supplied as powder for mixing with deionized water have been introduced by Meller Optics Inc. Suitable for grinding, lapping and finishing a variety of optics, the Microlux alumina abrasives can be used with optics made from calcium fluoride, germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, zinc sulfide and stainless steel. Microlux-R is agglomerated and 99.98% pure. Microlux-RZ is deagglomerated, 99.99% pure and recommended for fine grinding and uniform polishing. Both are available in seven particle sizes, from 0.05 to 3.0 μm.
