Meller-Optics.jpgHigh-purity calcined alumina polishing abrasives that are premixed or supplied as powder for mixing with deionized water have been introduced by Meller Optics Inc. Suitable for grinding, lapping and finishing a variety of optics, the Microlux alumina abrasives can be used with optics made from calcium fluoride, germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, zinc sulfide and stainless steel. Microlux-R is agglomerated and 99.98% pure. Microlux-RZ is deagglomerated, 99.99% pure and recommended for fine grinding and uniform polishing. Both are available in seven particle sizes, from 0.05 to 3.0 μm.

grinding
The process in the manufacture of an optical system that gives it the required geometric shape.
lapping
1. The process of wearing down the surface of a softer material by rubbing it under pressure against the surface of a harder material that has been formed in the shape opposite to that desired on the softer material. Loose, wet abrasive generally is used between the two parts, but sometimes the abrasive is embedded in the lap in a rigid form (see diamond cutting tool). 2. See fiber lapping.
