Coherent Inc. said the two new models in its Matrix 355 series of solid-state lasers are economical, air-cooled 355-nm systems for OEM integration that feature Matrix technology previously available only with infrared output.

According to Coherent, these lasers combine consistent operation with high performance (high beam quality, low noise) and exceptional lifetime. Two models are currently offered: the Matrix 355-1-60 delivers over 1 W of average power at a 60-kHz pulse repetition rate, and the Matrix 355-2-20 delivers 2 W at 20 kHz. Both lasers are RoHS compliant and have warranties.

Matrix lasers feature PermAlign (soldered) component-mounting technology, robotic assembly methods, and long-lived components such as AAA (aluminum-free active area) pump diodes.

Before the introduction of these 355-nm lasers, Matrix technology was available only with infrared output. Now, these new maintenance-free lasers use that design with ultraviolet-compatible materials in the laser head, plus unique multipass harmonics, to deliver long lifetime, low pulse-to-pulse noise stability, excellent thermal pointing stability and high beam quality, according to Coherent.

The output characteristics of Matrix 355 lasers make them suitable for precision applications in materials processing and microelectronics, such as stereolithography (rapid prototyping), LCD/FPD titling, memory repair, thin-film processing, precision marking and semiconductor scribing. In all of these applications, the company said, the lasers provide complete control over pulse energy and timing, including the ability to hold the pulse energy constant as the repetition rate is varied.
