Rofin-Baasel UK Ltd. has introduced the Comet 1K, a battery-operated laser power meter that can be set to automatic mode for hands-free operation. As soon as the laser is turned on, the device measures the heat rise from a 10-s exposure to a laser beam and calculates the laser power with ±5% accuracy by comparing the first and final temperatures. A sophisticated algorithm takes into account the initial temperature of the meter to ensure accuracy of measurement, even if the meter is already hot, and it enables several sequential readings before the device must be water-cooled. The power measurement range is from 20 to 1000 W, and the spectral range is between 0.2 and 20 μm.
The CE-approved instrument also can be operated in manual mode, and the company says that it is easy for the user to recalibrate. The display is a 2 × 8-character LCD with a character height of 5 mm, and internal memory stores the last three readings.
