Nanomotion Inc. has introduced a Z-axis autofocus stage that provides positioning and focusing for microscopy and imaging applications. It uses a high-resolution encoder with an inverse piezoelectric ceramic servomotor sized appropriately for the load. A spring counterbalance enables management of larger loads in a vertical orientation, without excessive motor force. The device provides a travel range of up to 25 mm and can make focus moves from 1 to 10 μm in 5 ms, settling to 100 nm. It accommodates a static load of up to 400 g.
