SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 4, 2009 – The Genesis 532-2000 S green laser now available from Coherent Inc. is suitable for scientific and OEM applications.

Coherent-Genesis.jpgUsing a proprietary optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, the 2000-mW CW laser provides an alternative to diode-pumped solid-state lasers. It offers beam characteristics of M2 <1.2, no “green noise” and an overall amplitude noise at 0.06 percent or better.

It is easy to integrate into experiments and OEM systems because of its air-cooled laser with no cooling water requirements and its compact laser head. Its platform allows power and wavelength scaling throughout the IR, visible and UV, and it uses the same multiwatt semiconductor gain chip that is in the 532-nm OPSL lasers.

The laser is suitable for high-throughput applications in life sciences, including flow cytometry and DNA sequencing. Other applications include inspection, particle detection and measurement.

diode-pumped solid-state laser
A compact solid-state laser, referred to as DPSSL, created when a laser diode pumps light into either the sides or end of gain crystal. Depending on where the pumping occurs, high-quality and stable output beams can be achieved with end-pumped lasers, and high-power output beams can be realized as with side-pumped lasers. Common in green laser pointers, DPSSLs are also used for a variety of materials processing applications, such as cutting and precision marking, and in optogenetics.

A method of measuring the characteristics of microscopic particles, usually cells, as they flow in a fluid stream through a beam of light. Particles may be stained with fluorescent dye and the fluorescence detected via laser illumination.
